MONASTIC LIFE

Oblature

Since 1885, more than 2,500 people have described their Christian commitment to society there. Although not monks of the community, they are indeed oblates of the Abbey of Maredsous. They come for the holidays, the meetings where they hear a commentary on the Rule, such as presentations dealing with substantive issues and current events.

They rejoice in “preferring nothing to the love of Jesus Christ” (RB 4, 21). This inspires them to take care of themselves, during a life of interiority, humility, indulgence, discretion, moderation, silence, love of Holy Scripture, spiritual readings. But also, for many, church services, human solidarity, …

The Master of the Oblates initially welcomes sympathizers to meetings for mutual recognition. Then, they choose, by mutual agreement, to be accepted as candidates for permanent commitment. When the day arrives, they sign a charter. They place it on the altar during a community Eucharist.

The Letter from Maredsous” and “The Messenger” serve as their periodic link with the Abbey or the Master of the Oblates, Fr. Jean-Marie Karangwa, their monastic advisor, and Christian F. Mathieu, the delegated head of the Oblates.
